Rep. Steve Cohen Ends Re-Election Bid Following Tennessee Redistricting
Democratic Representative Steve Cohen of Tennessee has announced he will not seek re-election after the state's legislature enacted a new U.S. House map that significantly alters his majority-Black district to favor Republicans. This decision comes in the wake of a recent Supreme Court ruling that weakened federal Voting Rights Act protections, prompting several southern states, including Tennessee, to redraw congressional districts. Cohen, who has served his Memphis-based district for nearly two decades, expressed his frustration, stating that the redistricting was designed to defeat him. Despite his decision to step down, Cohen has indicated he might re-enter the race if a lawsuit challenging the redistricting succeeds in restoring his old district.
