Citrus Compound Hesperetin Shows Promise in Reversing Liver Aging in Mice
A recent study has identified hesperetin, a natural flavonoid found in citrus fruits, as a potential agent for reversing signs of liver aging. In experiments conducted on naturally aged mice, hesperetin treatment was shown to rejuvenate liver cells by increasing the levels of the protective gene Cisd2. This gene, along with its partners Hmgcs2 and Pparα, forms a molecular pathway crucial for controlling liver aging. As mice aged, levels of Pparα and Cisd2 decreased, leading to chemical stress, abnormal fat accumulation, and other liver-damaging processes. The introduction of hesperetin triggered a molecular chain reaction, stabilizing Hmgcs2, which then interacted with Pparα to activate the production of Cisd2. This process partially restored a youthful molecular profile in aged mouse livers, reversing approximately 24% of age-linked gene-expression changes.
