Extended Heat Wave Threatens New York's Grid This Summer
The New York Independent System Operator (NYISO) has issued a warning about the potential impact of an extended heat wave on the state's electric grid this summer. The reliability margins are expected to be the lowest in recent history, with extreme weather and an aging generation mix contributing to the risk of blackouts. NYISO's summer reliability assessment estimates that 34,615 MW of power resources will be available to meet a forecasted peak demand of 31,578 MW. However, the required reserve of 2,620 MW leaves a reliability margin of only 417 MW under baseline conditions. In the event of a three-day heat wave with average temperatures of 95°F (35°C), the capacity margin could drop to -1,679 MW, and further to -3,370 MW if temperatures reach 98°F (37°C).
