Major Publishers and PEN America Launch U.S. Author Safety Program Amid Rising Threats
In response to increasing threats and harassment faced by authors due to book bans, three major publishers and several literary organizations have partnered with PEN America to establish the U.S. Author Safety Program. This initiative aims to provide authors with training, consultations, resources, and peer support to help them navigate intimidation tactics. PEN America has already raised nearly $1 million for the program, with a goal of over $2 million. The program builds on previous efforts by PEN America, Hachette Book Group, and Scholastic to support authors and journalists facing similar challenges. Key partners include Hachette Book Group, Macmillan Publishers, and Penguin Random House, with contributions from bestselling author David Baldacci and a special grant from the New York Community Trust. The program will officially launch this summer, with small group safety consultations beginning in the fall.
