A recent study published in *Psychological Reports* indicates a strong link between childhood maltreatment, specifically emotional abuse and neglect, and the development of anxiety in adulthood. The research, led by Stephanie Vaccarezza, a clinical psychologist at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, found that impairments in personality functioning largely explain this association. The study involved 335 adults undergoing psychotherapy, with 64.2% reporting at least one type of childhood maltreatment. Emotional abuse was the most common, affecting 43% of participants. More than half of the sample met the criteria for generalized anxiety disorder. The study highlights that emotional neglect's link to adult anxiety was entirely mediated by diminished personality functioning, while emotional abuse retained a direct link, with personality impairments still accounting for over half of its effect.
