Australia Proposes Law Allowing Users to Opt Out of Social Media Algorithms
Australia has introduced draft legislation, dubbed 'My Feed, My Way,' that would require social media platforms to offer users the choice to opt out of algorithm-driven content feeds. This proposed law mandates that platforms, such as Meta and TikTok, prompt both new and existing users aged over 16 to select between a personalized, algorithmic feed or a chronological feed displaying content only from accounts they actively follow. Communications Minister Anika Wells stated that users should have the right to decide how they receive content. The bill also expands platforms' responsibilities to identify and address harmful and illegal content, with a particular focus on protecting minors from design features linked to addictive use and self-esteem issues. Non-compliance with these regulations could result in penalties exceeding A$109 million (approximately $78.6 million).
