Valley Grange Prepares for Annual Dictionary Days Program in Maine Elementary Schools
Valley Grange members and friends in Guilford, Maine, are preparing for their annual 'Dictionary Days' program, which involves distributing personal dictionaries to third-grade students in five local elementary schools. The participating schools include Brownville, Harmony, Piscataquis Community, SeDoMoCha, and Ridgeview elementary schools. Program Director Walter Boomsma has contacted each school to ascertain third-grade enrollment counts. Since its inception over 20 years ago, the Guilford-based Grange has distributed more than 4,000 dictionaries. The program emphasizes the enjoyment of learning and discovery, along with teaching students how to 'look it up.' Dictionaries are ordered from The Dictionary Project, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, with orders often totaling up to 10 cases.
