San Francisco Bay Area Captivated by 'Chonkers', the Large Sea Lion
A massive Steller sea lion, nicknamed 'Chonkers', has become a local celebrity in the San Francisco Bay area. Weighing approximately 2,000 pounds, Chonkers has been residing at Pier 39 for about a month, attracting attention from residents, visitors, and social media users. This sea lion is significantly larger than the typical California sea lions found in the area, which usually weigh up to 850 pounds. According to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, male Steller sea lions can reach up to 2,500 pounds and 11 feet in length. Although Steller sea lions typically inhabit regions around Alaska, they occasionally stray as far south as San Francisco.
