Woman Loses Nearly $1 Million in Sophisticated LinkedIn Romance Scam
A woman identified as Gaby lost nearly $1 million over two years in a romance scam that began on LinkedIn. The scammer used the photos and likeness of a real man, Brian Haugen, to build a relationship with Gaby. The deception started with a seemingly legitimate connection through a former colleague on LinkedIn, which lowered Gaby's guard. The scammer gradually built trust, even returning an initial sum of $10,000, before escalating requests for money for supposed business troubles, taxes, customs fees, and even a fake health crisis requiring surgery. The scammer consistently avoided in-person meetings, citing various excuses, and used emotional manipulation to secure large sums of money from Gaby.
