Federal Judge Blocks Colorado Law Requiring Inspections of Immigrant Detention Center
A federal judge in Denver has issued a ruling that blocks key provisions of a new Colorado state law, House Bill 1276, which mandated regular health inspections at the state's only immigrant detention center. U.S. District Court Judge Daniel D. Domenico sided with Geo Group, the private company operating the Aurora detention facility, determining that the law's requirements for unannounced inspections at least once every three months were preempted by federal law and Geo's existing contract with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The judge found that these new inspection rules, along with a provision requiring Geo to cover their costs, imposed immediate and likely unconstitutional burdens on the company.
