Xenotransplantation Advances with New Clinical Trials
Xenotransplantation, the transplantation of animal organs into humans, is entering a new era with significant advancements in clinical trials. Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital, led by Tatsuo Kawai and Leonardo Riella, are using CRISPR gene-editing technology to enhance the compatibility of pig organs with human hosts. Recent trials have shown promising results, with pig kidneys successfully functioning in monkeys for extended periods. In 2024, a genetically edited pig kidney was transplanted into a human patient, marking a milestone in the field. Although the patient later died from unrelated causes, the trial provided valuable data that has paved the way for larger clinical trials. These trials aim to test the safety and efficacy of pig kidneys in human patients, potentially addressing the critical shortage of human donor organs.
