Portland Public Schools Proposes Closure of Up to 14 Schools Amid 'Rightsizing' Efforts
Portland Public Schools (PPS) has unveiled two scenarios that could lead to significant changes for its elementary, middle, and K-8 schools, including the closure of up to 14 buildings, program consolidations, and boundary adjustments. Scenario A proposes closing 14 schools: 13 elementary schools (Maplewood, Stephenson, Irvington, Rose City Park, Buckman, Creston, Marysville, Woodmere, Lewis, Beach, James John, Peninsula, Sabin) and one middle school (Sellwood Middle School), along with 38 boundary changes. Scenario B suggests closing 11 schools, with Stephenson, Rose City Park, and Lewis elementaries remaining open, and includes 34 boundary changes. These proposals also involve shifting many K-8 schools to K-5 structures and relocating or combining dual language immersion programs.
