Atlanta Police Officer Shot Responding to Mental Health Crisis Call, Released from Hospital
An Atlanta police officer, Devante Matthews, 30, was shot on Monday while responding to a mental health crisis call in Southwest Atlanta. The incident occurred around 8:41 a.m. on Clark Howard Lane SW, where police encountered Michael Gates, 24, who was experiencing a mental health crisis. According to Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum, officers have responded to this residence multiple times previously, and Gates reportedly suffers from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Upon the officers' arrival, Gates began firing, and Officer Matthews was hit in the right arm. Matthews was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital and has since been released, expected to make a full recovery. Gates was taken into custody and will face charges.
