Island Voyagers Honor Late Master Navigator Sesario Sewralur with Tribute
Island voyagers have paid tribute to Grand Master Navigator Sesario Sewralur, who passed away on July 10, 2026, in Taiwan. Sewralur, the son of renowned navigator Mau Piailug from Satawal in the Federated States of Micronesia, was instrumental in preserving traditional navigation techniques using stars and seas. His death followed a significant voyage from Micronesia to Okinawa and Taiwan. The Polynesian Voyaging Society, which Sewralur was closely associated with, posted an online tribute to honor his contributions. Nainoa Thompson, CEO of the society, and Chamorro navigator Ron Acfalle, both emphasized Sewralur's role in keeping the seafaring traditions alive. Sewralur was known for his deep commitment to teaching navigation, a legacy he inherited from his father, and was recognized for his efforts in uniting Pacific Islanders through the Pwo ceremony, a sacred rite of passage for navigators.
