Past Fossil Fuel Emissions to Continue Warming Planet for Decades, Fueling Future Legal Battles
New research from the University of Washington indicates that past emissions from major fossil fuel producers will continue to warm the planet for decades, even if greenhouse gas emissions were to cease immediately. This study, published in PLOS Climate, highlights that the top 178 oil, gas, coal, and cement producers, referred to as 'carbon majors,' are responsible for a substantial portion of the trillion tons of carbon dioxide already emitted. This carbon will remain in the atmosphere for millennia, trapping heat and contributing to persistent warming. Dargan Frierson, a UW associate professor of atmospheric and climate science, emphasizes that the amount of warming attributable to past emissions is calculable and relatively independent of future emissions. This ongoing impact means that the Earth will remain approximately 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial temperatures, even in a scenario where all future emissions are halted. The findings strengthen the scientific basis for connecting extreme wea...
