New PEACEPLUS-funded Initiative Aims to Bridge Rural Digital Divide in Border Regions
A new PEACEPLUS-funded initiative, the Digital Communities project, has been launched with the aim of bridging the rural digital divide in five remote rural areas across Northern Ireland and the border regions. Led by The Wheel, in partnership with several organizations including NICVA, Volunteer Now, and Community Enterprise Association Ireland, the project will invest €3.7 million to build digital capacity. It seeks to assist individuals, organizations, and businesses in understanding and utilizing information and communications technology to improve their lives and communities. The initiative will specifically support youth work organizations, women’s groups, and community enterprise hubs by providing digital tools to enhance social services for disadvantaged groups and foster local economic development. The pilot areas include Causeway Coast, Mid-Ulster, Strabane/Lifford border, Newry, and the Glaslough/Caledon border.
