Saharan Dust Transports Nutrients to Amazon Rainforest
Every year, approximately 182 million tonnes of dust are lifted from the Sahara Desert, with 27.7 million tonnes settling in the Amazon basin, according to NASA's CALIPSO satellite data (2007-2013). This dust, rich in phosphorus, replenishes the Amazon's nutrient-depleted soils, compensating for the 22,000 tonnes of phosphorus lost annually to rain and flooding. The primary source of this nutrient-rich dust is the Bodélé Depression in Chad, a dried lakebed of ancient diatoms. The dust travels across the Atlantic in the Saharan Air Layer, a hot, dry atmospheric layer, taking about five to seven days to reach the Americas.
