Smithsonian Museum Director Melissa Chiu to Lead Guggenheim Museum
Melissa Chiu, director of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden at the Smithsonian Institution, has announced her departure to lead the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Chiu, who has been with the Hirshhorn for 12 years, is credited with expanding the museum's digital presence and educational programs. Her move comes amid a period of change at the Smithsonian, with several directors leaving in recent years. Chiu's leadership at the Hirshhorn included significant fundraising and the expansion of the museum's collection. She will assume her new role at the Guggenheim in September.
