South Florida Faith Leaders Demand Opening of Miami Mental Health Center
Over 800 faith leaders and community activists gathered at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Miami to urge the Miami Dade County Commission to expedite the opening of the Miami Center for Mental Health and Recovery. The center, promised to voters in 2004, aims to provide comprehensive treatment and support for mentally ill individuals, diverting them from jail. Despite over $50 million spent on renovations and secured funding for the initial years, the facility remains unused. Non-profit groups have been selected to operate the center, and local agencies, including the Homeless Trust, have pledged support. However, the center has yet to open, prompting community leaders to demand accountability and action.
