High Plains Ranches Face Forage Shortages Amid Drought and Wildfires
Ranches across the High Plains are grappling with significant forage shortages as summer sets in, driven by widespread drought and recent wildfires. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor as of May 28, 2026, nearly all High Plains states are experiencing some level of drought, with Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming facing extreme to exceptional conditions. North Dakota is less affected, with only its western edge experiencing moderate to severe drought. These conditions are straining hay stocks and pasture quality, prompting ranchers to consider alternative feeds and implement strategic grazing practices. Rotational grazing and high stocking density are being recommended to maintain forage quality and encourage regrowth. Additionally, warm-season grasses like blue grama and big bluestem are expected to grow later in the season, while cool-season grasses may see limited regrowth in the fall.
