Study Links Migraines to Accelerated Brain Aging in Memory and Emotion Regions
A recent study published in Brain Communications has found that individuals suffering from migraines exhibit patterns of accelerated brain aging, particularly in areas related to emotion and cognition. The research, conducted by Hung-Yu Liu and colleagues at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University and Taipei Veterans General Hospital, used MRI scans to assess the brain health of migraine patients. The study revealed that migraine sufferers had a global brain-age gap of about 4.24 years, indicating their brains appeared older than their chronological age. This accelerated aging was most pronounced in the prefrontal, frontal, parietal, and temporal cortices, as well as the amygdala, which are regions associated with pain perception, emotional regulation, and cognitive control.
