Virginia Teacher Disputes Fire Department's Claim That Python Started School Fire
A science teacher in Virginia is challenging the official account from fire authorities regarding the cause of a recent school fire. Firefighters and the county's chief fire marshal, Steven Whipple, have publicly stated that a python named Nanner, belonging to the teacher, caused the blaze at Forest Middle School by knocking over a heat fixture. The fire, which occurred on August 13, resulted in damage to several classrooms and the death of a tortoise. However, the teacher, Brittany Jacobs, argues that Nanner was not responsible. Jacobs, who has kept animals in her classroom for educational purposes for 18 years, asserts that all light fixtures were properly secured and that the fire's intensity melted parts of Nanner's enclosure, suggesting the snake was trying to escape an existing fire, not cause one. Surveillance video reportedly shows the fire visible for 20 minutes before Nanner was seen exiting her enclosure.
