Anthropic's Claude AI Blocks Biological Weapons Research and State-Linked Misuse Attempts
Anthropic, a leading AI company, has released a threat-intelligence report detailing how its Claude AI model has blocked several attempts by scientists to conduct research that could aid biological weapons development. The report, covering eight months of misuse data, also documents state-linked actors from Russia, China, Iran, and Yemen using Claude for propaganda, dissident surveillance, and conventional weapons development. One significant case involved a scientist attempting to draft a grant application for gain-of-function research on a mosquito-borne virus, intended for a military institution. Anthropic flagged this request due to the combination of gain-of-function research and its military context, subsequently banning the associated accounts and dismantling relay networks used to bypass regional access controls. Andrew Weber, a senior fellow at the Council on Strategic Risks and former U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense, highlighted these as 'chilling examples' of state-sponsored biological weapo...
