Federal Grant of $15 Million to Boost U.S. Commercial Fishing Technology and Industry
A $15 million federal grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation has been awarded to a consortium of New England commercial fishing advocates, oceanographic researchers, and tech companies. The funding aims to enhance the region's seafood industry from harvest to processing by developing advanced fishing technologies. Key projects include the further development of a 'third eye' camera system for groundfishermen, allowing them to see what enters their nets before hauling, thereby reducing bycatch. Additionally, autonomous robots will be developed to detect adverse underwater environmental conditions, such as hypoxia, which can lead to dead lobsters in traps. A significant portion of the grant, half a million dollars, is earmarked for 'supply chain roadmapping' to analyze and revitalize the seafood processing sector, which has seen jobs decline and move overseas.
