Data from airports in Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Long Beach, and San Diego indicate record-high average dew points since 1980. On September 8, 2026, coastal cities like Long Beach, Huntington Beach, and Newport Beach recorded dew points of 76°F (24.4°C), comparable to typically humid cities like New Orleans and Orlando. This unusual moisture is attributed to a combination of monsoonal moisture and remnants of Hurricane Marie, along with an extraordinary marine heat wave along the California coastline. Sea temperatures near Ensenada, Baja California, are reported to be 10°F (5.6°C) above average, with waters off Los Angeles reaching record highs. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has also noted a significant rise in sea levels, which could exacerbate coastal flooding and erosion during the upcoming El Niño winter.
