Rain Eases Drought in North Carolina, Aids Agriculture
Rainfall across North Carolina on Thursday and Friday has provided much-needed relief to the state’s ongoing drought conditions, according to The Black Chronicle. As of 8 a.m. Thursday, the U.S. Drought Monitor reported that 28.73% of the state remains in exceptional or extreme drought, a significant improvement from last week’s 38.7%. Rainfall totals exceeded 4 inches in several cities, including High Point (6.35 inches), Burlington (5.19 inches), and Greensboro (5.01 inches). Flash flooding has been forecasted in the northern Piedmont and Coastal Plain regions, while river levels, boosted by earlier rainfall, are expected to rise again over the weekend. The rain is particularly beneficial for North Carolina’s agriculture, which contributes $102 billion annually to the state’s economy. Key crops such as corn, soybeans, and tobacco are expected to benefit from the improved moisture levels.
