Massive Rescue Effort Underway for Largest Bottlenose Dolphin Stranding on New England Coast
A significant rescue operation is in progress following the largest known stranding of bottlenose dolphins off the coast of Massachusetts. The incident, which occurred along Cape Cod, involved nearly 30 dolphins stranded across beaches from Brewster to Wellfleet. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) was alerted to the situation, which saw several dolphins refloat with the tide, while others perished before help arrived. The unique geography of Cape Cod, with its extreme tidal fluctuations and shallow flats, is a recognized hotspot for such mass stranding events. Rescue teams have fitted two dolphins with satellite tags to monitor their movements, and by Wednesday, the tagged dolphins had moved to safer, deeper waters near Sandy Neck Beach in Barnstable.
