Shoplifting Incidents Surge by 133% Over Five Years, Highlighting Retail Crime Concerns
Shoplifting offences in the UK have surged by 133% over the past five years, according to data analyzed by the Liberal Democrats. The number of reported thefts increased from 228,128 in 2020-21 to 530,457 in 2024-25. Despite the rise in incidents, only 19.83% of these offences led to charges, with significant variations in charge rates among different police forces. The Metropolitan Police had the lowest charge rate, while Durham Constabulary had the highest. This increase in shoplifting has prompted calls for stronger police responses, as retail crime, including abuse and violence against workers, becomes more prevalent.
