Tokyo Government Encourages Shorts at Work Amidst Heatwave, Faces Mixed Reactions
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has launched an initiative called 'Tokyo Cool Biz,' encouraging employees to wear more casual attire, including shorts, to combat rising summer temperatures. This policy, introduced by Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, aims to expand on her previous energy-saving initiatives. However, the policy has received mixed reactions. A survey by Gorilla Clinic revealed that 53.5% of respondents opposed wearing shorts to work, citing concerns over body shape and leg hair. Women, in particular, expressed discomfort with seeing male colleagues' bare legs. Despite these concerns, the initiative has made casual attire more socially acceptable in Japanese workplaces, especially in startups and tech companies.
