Amherst College Science Center Evacuated Due to Suspicious Package, No Threat Found
On Tuesday morning, the Amherst College Science Center was evacuated after a suspicious package and battery pack were discovered at its loading dock. Associate Vice President for Safety and Chief of Police John Carter stated that a community member initially alerted the Amherst College Environmental Health and Safety department, which then contacted the Amherst College Police Department (ACPD). The items included a note reading: “Fire hazard, call Environmental Health and Safety. Do not put in trash or store in building.” At approximately 10:39 a.m., ACPD decided to evacuate the Science Center. A police canine unit was requested and alerted investigators to the possible presence of explosive materials, prompting the dispatch of the State Police bomb disposal team. However, at 12:32 p.m., ACPD issued an all-clear, confirming that no dangerous materials were found.
