Florida Attorney General Establishes CHINA Prevention Unit to Combat Foreign Influence
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has announced the creation of the Consumer Harm from International Nefarious Actors (CHINA) Prevention Unit. This unit is the first state-level initiative in the U.S. specifically targeting foreign corporations, particularly those with Chinese ownership or government ties, that collect consumer data from Florida residents. The unit is empowered to issue subpoenas, conduct audits, and bring civil and criminal enforcement actions under Florida’s consumer protection statutes. Its primary focus is on data privacy violations, money laundering, and cyber fraud linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and other foreign adversaries. The health technology sector is a key target due to the sensitive nature of patient data and the risks posed by Chinese-manufactured medical devices.
