U.S. Faces 'Difficult Task' in Forming Sanctions Coalition Against China Over Taiwan, CNAS Report Warns
A new report from the Center for a New American Security (CNAS) indicates that the U.S. will encounter significant challenges in assembling a unified global sanctions coalition if China attempts to alter the status quo in the Taiwan Strait. The report emphasizes that a uniform approach will not be effective, and instead, the U.S. must develop partner-specific strategies tailored to the unique political and economic conditions of countries like Germany, Singapore, and India. These three nations were chosen for the study due to their distinct geopolitical orientations, economic exposure to China, and institutional capacities. The research, based on interviews with stakeholders and trips to Singapore, Berlin, and Brussels, concludes that while a sanctions coalition is possible, it is far from guaranteed, primarily due to China's deep economic ties with these potential partners, which create strong disincentives for them to impose or escalate sanctions.
