Record Drought in the U.S. Raises Concerns Over Fires, Water, and Food Prices
The United States is experiencing a record-breaking drought, with over 61% of the contiguous states in moderate to exceptional drought conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. This situation is particularly severe in the Southeast, where 97% of the area is affected, and in the West, where two-thirds are experiencing drought. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports that March saw the highest drought severity since records began in 1895. The lack of snow in the West, which typically provides water for the summer, exacerbates the situation. Additionally, a separate drought in the South, influenced by the jet stream, is compounding the issue. Experts warn that this could lead to a challenging wildfire season, increased food prices, and significant water supply issues.
