European Public Supports Increased Defense Spending with Conditions, ECFR Poll Reveals
A recent poll conducted by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) across 15 European countries indicates a conditional public willingness to support higher defense spending. The survey, which included nearly 19,500 respondents, found that while there is growing recognition for increased defense investments, public support is significantly influenced by domestic economic pressures. Specifically, 45% of respondents opposed reducing other areas of public spending to fund national defense, while 39% supported such a trade-off. Jana Kobzova, co-director of the ECFR’s European Security Programme, noted that this backing is highly conditional due to ongoing economic difficulties. The poll also highlighted regional variations, with stronger support for reallocating public funds to defense in Estonia (55%) and the Netherlands (54%), contrasting with higher opposition in Italy (63%), Austria (59%), and Germany (56%).
