Governor Gavin Newsom Criticized by Pro-Transit Group for Climate Policy Changes
Governor Gavin Newsom is facing criticism from the pro-transit group Streets For All, which accuses him of climate hypocrisy. The group is particularly upset about funding cuts to the California Air Resources Board (CARB), an agency appointed by Newsom. These cuts are part of changes to the state's cap-and-invest program, which places a cap on greenhouse gas emissions and requires major polluters to buy allowances for their emissions. Streets For All, along with other environmental groups, argues that recent proposals could lead to a $2 billion reduction in the cap-and-trade fund, potentially benefiting oil companies and reducing funds for climate and energy programs. The group has launched a series of newspaper ads in early-primary states, criticizing Newsom's policies and questioning his 2028 presidential ambitions.
