Raleigh Implements Stage 1 Water Restrictions Amid Severe Drought
Raleigh, North Carolina, is facing severe drought conditions affecting the watersheds of Falls Lake and Swift Creek. In response, Raleigh Water is activating Stage 1 water-use restrictions starting April 20, 2026. Despite the drought, the city's drinking water supply remains robust, with Falls Lake retaining 84% of its water supply pool. Raleigh also benefits from secondary water sources at Lake Benson and Lake Wheeler, both near full capacity. The restrictions aim to conserve water for essential needs, including drinking, healthcare, and emergencies. The Water Shortage Response Plan, which uses historical lake and weather data, guides the decision to implement these measures early to ensure long-term water resource sustainability.
