Researchers Detect Oncogenic Viruses in Wastewater, Potential for Cancer Prevention
Researchers from Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas Health Science Center have successfully detected and tracked oncogenic viruses in wastewater across Texas. The study, published in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, utilized advanced genetic sequencing technology to identify over 3,000 human viruses, including those linked to cancer. The research found a significant presence of viruses such as HPV, hepatitis B and C, and Epstein-Barr virus, which are known to cause various cancers. The study observed an increase in these viruses post-2024, potentially due to increased travel and social interactions following the COVID-19 pandemic. This discovery could lead to new methods for monitoring and preventing oncogenic infections.
