Reserve Bank of Fiji Governor Advocates for Inclusive Green Finance to Combat Climate Challenges
Ariff Ali, the Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji, emphasizes the importance of Inclusive Green Finance (IGF) as a means to build resilience against climate shocks. Growing up in a financially vulnerable environment, Ali witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by those without access to financial resources. As Governor, he is driven by the goal of creating an inclusive and sustainable economy in Fiji. IGF initiatives, such as parametric insurance, are designed to provide immediate financial support to communities affected by climate events like cyclones. Fiji has pioneered efforts in this area, being the first emerging nation to issue a sovereign green bond, which has been instrumental in funding climate-resilient infrastructure. The Pacific Islands Regional Initiative, supported by the Alliance for Financial Inclusion (AFI), has been crucial in advancing IGF across the region, helping vulnerable populations prepare for and recover from climatic shocks.
