Alcatrazes Archipelago Identified as Key Breeding Ground for Endangered Sharks
A study has identified the Alcatrazes Archipelago off the coast of Sao Paulo, Brazil, as a year-round breeding ground for critically endangered sand tiger sharks. Previously thought to migrate for breeding, these sharks are now known to complete their entire reproductive cycle in this protected area. Researchers used baited remote underwater video systems to observe the sharks, noting mating behaviors and gestation. The study highlights the importance of the archipelago as a conservation area, providing a safe habitat for these vulnerable species.
