Meta AI Faces Scrutiny for Creating Detailed Child Profiles from Family Posts
Meta AI, integrated into Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, has been criticized for generating detailed profiles of children using years of family posts. This issue came to light when a mother, Kalie Robins, posted a video of her daughter on Facebook. Meta AI then prompted her with a question, 'Who is the child passenger?' Upon clicking, the AI system began compiling extensive information about her children, including names, birth dates, and videos, some of which were from posts made years ago or even deleted. The system also attempted to pinpoint Robins' current location by analyzing old and new posts. Meta has acknowledged that the feature 'missed the mark' and stated that the issue, which caused Meta AI to suggest questions about personal topics, has been fixed. However, a Meta spokesperson also noted that the AI only surfaced information accessible to the user asking the question, which does not fully explain the retrieval of deleted content.
