Lawmakers Urge President Trump to Strengthen U.S.-Canada Ties Amid Tariff Concerns
Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur and Congresswoman Debbie Dingell, co-chairs of the bipartisan Congressional Great Lakes Task Force, have led 86 House colleagues in sending a letter to President Trump. The letter urges the administration to reconsider its diplomatic approach towards Canada and to acknowledge the critical importance of the U.S.-Canada relationship. Lawmakers expressed concern that the administration's escalating use of trade barriers, including recent tariffs and threats of additional restrictions, is creating uncertainty for businesses, workers, farmers, and consumers on both sides of the border. They highlighted that American exports to Canada and Canadian exports to the U.S. both declined in 2025 following the implementation of U.S. tariffs.
