Alzheimer's Care Costs Reach $400,000 for Raleigh Family, Highlighting Financial Strain
Alison George, a resident of Raleigh, has been managing the care of her mother, who suffers from late-stage Alzheimer's disease. The financial burden of her mother's care has reached approximately $389,000 since 2021, not including additional expenses such as medication and therapy. George's mother, a former elementary school teacher, was diagnosed with Alzheimer's a few years ago and also suffers from aphasia, which affects her ability to speak. Initially, George and her husband converted a guest house on their property to accommodate her mother, costing them $45,000. However, as her condition worsened, her mother moved to a memory care facility, where costs have continued to escalate. The family has been managing these expenses without long-term care insurance, which her parents had declined to purchase.
