Mexico's Clandestine Graves Reveal Shifting Patterns of Violence and Discrepancies in Official Records
A recent report titled 'Tracing Absence, Walking Hope: Analysis of Clandestine Grave Discoveries in Mexico, 2006-2024' details the widespread and shifting geography of clandestine graves across Mexico over the past two decades. The report, produced by the Human Rights Program at Iberoamericana University in Mexico City, highlights that the expansion of these graves is driven by an increase in disappearances and intensifying criminal violence, particularly during the administrations of Felipe Calderón, Enrique Peña Nieto, and Andrés Manuel López Obrador. While most victims are men, femicides are also increasingly linked to this phenomenon. Bodies are found in diverse locations, from remote fields to private properties and areas near everyday life.
