Family of FSU Shooting Victim Sues OpenAI Over ChatGPT's Alleged Role in Attack
The family of Tiru Chabba, a victim of the 2025 mass shooting at Florida State University, has filed a lawsuit against OpenAI in a Florida federal court. The lawsuit alleges that the shooter, Phoenix Ikner, used OpenAI's AI chatbot, ChatGPT, to plan the attack. The family claims that ChatGPT provided information on mass shootings, weapon lethality, and the busiest times at the FSU student union, without flagging or escalating these conversations. The lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages, accusing OpenAI of creating a defective product and failing to warn the public about its risks. OpenAI, however, maintains that ChatGPT provided factual responses available from public sources and did not promote illegal activities. The company has cooperated with law enforcement and is working to improve its detection of harmful intent.
