JetBlue Pilot Declares Emergency to Avoid Severe Thunderstorm After Disagreement with Air Traffic Control
On September 3, a JetBlue pilot operating Flight B61971 from Fort Lauderdale to Austin declared an emergency after refusing an air traffic control (ATC) instruction that the crew believed would direct their Airbus A320 through a severe thunderstorm. The pilot questioned the ATC controller's heading, stating, 'So you’re gonna make us go through a, uh, severe thunderstorm?' The controller maintained that her display showed only light precipitation and cited other traffic as a reason for not approving the pilot's requested turn. Despite ATC's insistence, the pilot declared an emergency, stating, 'Not from here, ma’am. So we declare an emergency, making a left turn heading two-six-zero for severe weather avoidance.' This declaration allowed the crew to immediately deviate from the ATC instruction and maneuver the aircraft to avoid the perceived severe weather. The flight subsequently continued to Austin and landed without further incident.
