Plant-Based Diets Linked to Improved Kidney Function and Reduced Inflammatory Burden
Dietary patterns emphasizing plant-based foods are associated with better kidney function and a reduced inflammatory burden compared to diets high in processed and red meat. This finding reflects overall dietary patterns rather than solely the protein source. A multi-cohort analysis also indicated that higher protein intake, from both plant and animal sources, was linked to a lower risk of all-cause mortality in older adults with mild-to-moderate chronic kidney disease (CKD), with mortality risk decreasing as protein intake increased. While plant-based protein is gaining recognition, current evidence is insufficient to definitively recommend a specific protein source for CKD populations. Individualized dietary approaches, medical treatment, and nutritional evaluation are crucial for preserving renal function in CKD patients. In healthy individuals, higher consumption of certain animal-protein-rich foods was associated with an increased risk of stage 3 CKD, whereas higher plant-based protein intake appeared...
