U.S. Government Initiates Crackdown on Southeast Asian Cyberscams, Sanctions Cambodian Senator
The U.S. government has launched a comprehensive crackdown on cyberscam operations in Southeast Asia, targeting networks operating primarily out of Cambodia and Myanmar. This initiative, described by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro as a 'new theater of war' against Chinese transnational organized crime, involves the Treasury Department sanctioning a Cambodian senator, Kok An, and 28 other individuals and entities. These sanctions are part of a broader effort by the Scam Center Strike Force, which includes the Department of Justice, FBI, and U.S. Secret Service, to dismantle these operations. The crackdown also involves the seizure of assets and the shutdown of online recruitment channels used for scams. The operations have been linked to human trafficking and have defrauded U.S. citizens of millions of dollars.
