Chinese AI Models Gain Global Popularity, Raising Concerns in Washington
Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) models are experiencing a significant surge in global adoption, particularly among companies in the U.S., Europe, and the 'Global South.' Usage data from developer platforms OpenRouter and Vercel indicates that Chinese models now account for a majority of tokens used, rising from a small share earlier in the year. For instance, on OpenRouter, Chinese models comprised 57%-67% of tokens in mid-September, up from 6%-13% in February. This increase is attributed to their improved performance, especially in tasks like coding, and their cost-effectiveness compared to models from American labs.
