ECOWAS Department of Political Affairs Holds Strategic Retreat in Lagos to Address Regional Challenges
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission's Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS) conducted a three-day retreat in Lagos, Nigeria, from August 3 to 5, 2026. The retreat, themed 'Positioning PAPS for Strategic Transition, Institutional Continuity and Emerging Peace & Security Challenges in the ECOWAS Region,' aimed to reflect on the department's achievements and challenges under the outgoing management. It also sought to strengthen coordination across its directorates and divisions, assess operational effectiveness, and formulate strategic recommendations for a smooth leadership transition. The event was attended by all department staff, relevant directorates within the commission, and force commanders of the ECOWAS Stabilization Support Missions in The Gambia and Guinea-Bissau. Dr. Danjuma AKU, Chairman of the Technical Organising Committee, emphasized the retreat's significance as a strategic opportunity for reflection and collaboration.
