Dr. Berhanu Kibret, an instructor at the University of Maryland's School of Pharmacy, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at Dallas Fort Worth airport. The detention occurred on July 21, 2026, following his attendance at a professional conference where he received a Teacher of the Year award. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Kibret, originally from Ethiopia, overstayed his visa, which expired on May 31, 2024. Despite having a valid Work Authorization, he remains in ICE custody pending immigration proceedings. The University of Maryland expressed concern over his detention, highlighting his contributions to the academic community.
